Sting Soccer Tryouts

If your returning child will miss tryouts but would like to be placed on a Sting team for the upcoming season, please complete the following two steps:

1. Register for tryouts and pay the tryout fee. This ensures we have a formal record of your child’s intent to return. It also supports the administrative costs of team formation and EMSA roster creation. Most importantly, it helps ensure no player is missed during the roster creation process.

2. Contact your child’s current coach to let them know your child will be away but would still like to be considered for a roster spot. Placement will be based on evaluations from the previous season.

The tryout fee applies to all players—whether attending tryouts or not—as it covers both tryout staffing and the extensive administrative work required to build teams and submit rosters to EMSA.

Once all sessions for your child’s age group are complete, our evaluators and coaches review the tryout evaluations and send out offers to join a Sting roster, using the contact information given at tryout registration. Players are placed on a roster only after an offer has been accepted. Teams are formed from the accepted offers, and once rosters are confirmed we submit them to EMSA.

For players who don’t receive an offer, we work closely with SWESMA to place them on community teams, so every child has somewhere to play

No, there may not be space for all children in the program. We are a competitive program with a focus on development. That said, we have teams from tier 1 to tier 3 and accept children of many skill levels — from members of other clubs at the tier 1 level and particularly at the younger age categories players just starting their soccer journey. We work closely with SWESMA to place players not accepted in the Sting Club program on community teams/programs.

Indoor 2026/27 registration fees are $1095 per player for U8–U11 and $1250 per player for U12–U19/Varsity. The $20 tryout fee is separate.

No. The tryout fee is non-refundable. This fee covers facility rentals and staffing for all registered participants and is charged for cost recovery purposes.  Tryouts are a competitive process with no guarantee of team placement. The fee applies regardless of outcome or attendance.

Yes. Goalkeepers should attend the team tryouts.

Please register and attend the tryout for your child's age group. Our tryouts are open to players from other clubs — see the schedule above.

No. Walk-ons are not allowed. All players must register through the TeamSnap link in order to participate.

Registration is required to ensure insurance coverage and to give the club accurate contact information before and after the placement process.

After team formation, it is highly unlikely a player can join a team mid-season.

Maybe. Please reach out to our administrator via the contact us page and give them your child’s name, age and gender. Though rare, there may be teams with open spots looking for one or two additional players.

Tryout dates are set during the Alberta Soccer Association approved tryout window.

The $20 fee and tryout registration give our staff a clear list of returning players and help us place every player appropriately. This process ensures clarity, tracking of participants and in the end better team formation. 

We operate male and female programming from U4 to U7 (Grassroots) and U8 to U19 (Club Soccer).

Issuing refunds after registration is rare and should not be expected. In cases of documented injury, moving or other special circumstances, we have worked with families to issue partial refunds on a case-by-case basis.

During the season, players can generally expect to be on the field 3 to 4 times per week. Games are typically scheduled 1 or 2 times in the week. Team practices are determined by the coaches on non-game days, while Club technical training sessions are generally held on weekends (Saturday or Sunday).

The Indoor season typically runs from October until the end of February. The Outdoor season generally runs from the beginning of May through to the end of July. For older teams that qualify for Provincials, the season may extend into August.

In regular league play, Sting teams generally play other club teams rather than EMSA community teams — we compete within an exclusive club system. Tournaments are the exception: community teams sometimes enter club tournaments, usually in tiers 2 and 3.

Joining Sting is a commitment. We expect players to attend training and practices regularly, and we ask families to help make that possible. For younger age groups we encourage equal playing time; at any age, though, poor attendance may lead to reduced game time. If regular attendance is not realistic for your family right now, a community program may be a better fit.
